1921D VAM-2A Die Gouge in O, Double, Date
Discovered by Martin Field, August 1980
(Desirability:
)
Condition Census: 64P, 64P, 64N, 63A, 63A (Total: 7 MS, 3 Circ.)
The VAM-2A die gouge contains a diagonal die gouge within the O of
DOLLAR. At some point in this die’s use, something scratched the inner
recess of the O, leaving a telltale mark on all subsequently produced coins.
This variety is is one of the older reported 1921-D varieties yet it had a
limited number of known coins when "Fun With 1921" was first published.
The location of the small, well hidden, die gouge was probably the reason
few are reported. Since the army of VAM collectors began
scrutinizing their 1921-D coins, more have emerged, but certainly less than
many of the other 1921-D VAMS.

The date, like other VAM-2 coins, is doubled along the tops of the 92 in
the date.
