1921D VAM-1AN Die In Wreath 2

1921D VAM-1AN Die Break Wreath 2

Discovered by John Kohut, February 2004  (Desirability:  )

Condition Census:  65N, 65N, 64PL-N, 55R  (Total:  MS,  Circ)

VAM-1AN has a large break hidden in wreath near the U of UNITED.  This die break is easy to over look, but once located, it is actually quite large.

When you've identified the reverse die break below, be sure to check the obverse features to determine if the coin is a VAM-12A or a VAM-1AN.  The two VAMs share the same reverse die but are mated to different obverse dies.

Later die states of the VAM-1AN have this characteristic obverse die crack by the 1st star.  The VAM-12A obverse has a different crack pattern here.  Note that some VAM-1AN coin have no cracks at all.  One 1921-D VAM-1AN was certified as MS-64PL by NG.  This particular coins has no cracks and has fine polishing lines from the die preparation that caused the proof like appearance.

Note the obverse may contain no die cracks at all on early die state coins.
