1921S VAM-1B3
Discovered by Martin Field, October 1978
Die gouge emerges from the top of the Phrygian cap. This is the
original "thorn head" pictured as VAM-1B in the so-called VAM book,
Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars, 4th
ed. 1998 by Leroy C. Van Allen a and A. George Mallis. This was the
only VAM-1B variety known untul 2002! A total of 8 die states are
known today.

All the VAM-1B coins share the same
characteristic die gouge between the leaf and the cap. It is visible with
the naked eye and is useful when checking a lot of coins while
cherry-picking.
