1921 Pitted Reverses

1921 Pitted Reverse Varieties

In 1921, several of the reverse dies became pitted from corrosion. The pitting typically occurs on the reverse of the coin because that die was on the bottom of the striking chamber it could accumulate water and rust. These coins include the following VAMs:

Raised dots around wreath bow, eagle's right leg feathers and tail feathers, LL in DOLLAR and E in ONE from a rusted die.  Note die scratch that runs thru the bow toward the arrow feathers pictured below.  This is a good diagnostic to tell VAM-1A from VAM-1E.

On some specimens, there is pitting around trust.

Late die state coins have a crack through the 2nd left star into the neck.

VAM-3F also has a horizontal die gouge through the Eagle's lower right wing. Thanks to Paul Pierce for pointing this out!

Some coins have a doubled profile along Liberty's nose. This difference has not yet been recognized as two separate VAMs.

1921 VAM-3G / VAM-3C - Pitted UN of UNITED and LL of DOLLAR

This variety has pitting around the UN of UNITED. Additionally, the LL of DOLLAR is also pitted. Because of this find, VAM-3C and VAM-3G in the large VAM book were discovered to be the same die.  Early and late die states have more or less pitting in these regions causing the 3C / 3G confusion.
